BURKE, Wis. — A truck caught fire and exploded on the interstate near Highway 51 late Friday morning; it wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was injured in the crash or fire.

Dane County dispatchers said the call first came in just before 11 a.m. as a vehicle that was smoking after hitting the median on westbound I-39/90/94, between highways 51 and 19. The vehicle then caught fire and exploded roughly 10 minutes after the initial call. The explosion was captured by a nearby Wisconsin Department of Transportation traffic camera.

Sun Prairie fire crews and a Madison Fire Department medic responded to the scene; Madison Fire Department spokesperson Cynthia Schuster said the Sun Prairie Fire Department is the lead agency. State Patrol also responded to assist.

At its peak, WisDOT’s online traffic map showed backups all the way down to the Highway 151 interchange just east of East Towne Mall. The truck that caught fire and emergency crews cleared the scene shortly after noon.

News 3 Now has reached out to the Sun Praire Fire Department to learn more about the crash and resulting fire.
