SALINEVILLE – Southern Local Elementary School is gearing up for a lesson on safety during Fire Prevention Week later this month.

SLES will play host to the Salineville, Franklin Township and Highlandtown volunteer fire departments the week of Sept. 26 with grades Pre-K through three taking part in activities. Guidance counselor Larry Rudloff, who organized the effort, said kids will meet firefighters during separate sessions and get a close-up view of vehicles and equipment when safety forces visit the campus.

“The program will be divided into two parts. The first part will be presented at the football stadium,” Rudloff said, adding that officials will discuss general fire safety and equipment. “At the conclusion of part one of the program, teachers will take their students to the parking lot for part two.”

Students will then view an actual fire truck and learn more details about the vehicle and its equipment.

Preschoolers and third-graders will participate that Monday with firefighters from Salineville and Franklin Township. Rudloff said both morning and afternoon preschool classes as well as all-day attendants will have an opportunity to join in while the departments will furnish educational fire safety materials. Rudloff will also provide safety-themed pencils, resource books and videos for teachers to use through Google Classroom. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Tuesday. Should it rain both days, a possible rain date will be scheduled for that Thursday, Sept. 29.

Students in grades kindergarten through second will take part in events on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when a crew from the Highlandtown VFD stops by to present their program. Rudloff added that Highlandtown VFD officials will also provide students with educational and safety materials, plus they will sponsor a Home Fire Escape Plan contest.

“The purpose of the escape plan is to give each of our students the opportunity to develop a functional home fire escape plan that could be implemented in the event that a home fire occurred. Fire Chief Jeremiah Cole will provide us with the necessary information on Wednesday when the HVFD presents their program to our students,” Rudloff said.

Rudloff will also supply fire safety pencils for each student and age-appropriate fire safety videos are available for pupils to view in their classrooms. In case of inclement weather, Wednesday’s activities will be postponed to Friday, Sept. 30. Should it rain that Friday, the event may be rescheduled to a later date.

He said multi-handicapped classes will also attend on those days while teachers may view videos and discuss the importance of fire safety in the fourth- and fifth-grade classes.
