The Poway City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve the purchase of a $1.65 million replacement fire ladder truck.
The anticipated delivery of the truck will be in about two years, according to Brian Mitchell, Poway Fire Department battalion chief of operations. The current truck was made in 2006 and they have a lifespan in frontline service of about 15 years.
Mitchell said the ladder truck can be used not only for structure fires but also access to roofs, in traffic wrecks and rescue operations.
The purchase might come with a hefty price, but it would be 7 percent more if officials waited until May 1 to purchase the truck, officials said. That would mean another $110,000.
“It’s a big ask…but it’s a necessary tool,” said Councilmember Barry Leonard.
Mayor Steve Vaus said training and teamwork are key.
“There’s one more ‘T’ and that’s tools,” he said. “I’m happy to approve.”
As for the older truck, officials plan to reuse a good portion of it while auctioning off parts that they can’t reuse, Mitchell said.
