From the First Responder Open House to high school homecoming, RoundTable photographers and reporters have been covering events and profiling people with compelling stories. Here’s more news from around Evanston:

On homecoming weekend, Evanston Township High School lit up the scoreboard Friday with a 31-0 victory over Niles West and turned down the field house lights Saturday at its first indoor homecoming dance in three years. Bringing the Latinx community and the Police Department together is a priority for Officer Cesar Galindo. He wears many hats in Evanston. One day, Galindo is a volunteer middle school basketball coach; another day he’s a Spanish translator. Now, he’s the subject of the RoundTable’s latest Hispanic Heritage Month profile.

Two ETHS alumni are working to build a more resilient Haiti at the nonprofit Lakou, a Haitian Creole word meaning a tight-knit community. “It’s really the essence of the Haitian culture,” said Executive Director Jude Laude. “Everyone has a voice and everyone respects one another.” Lakou teaches Haitians how to build hurricane- and earthquake-resistant buildings.

COVID-19 by the numbers: 12 new cases and no new deaths were reported Sept. 29, the last day the city updated totals. The seven-day average is 11 cases per day.

Saved by a quick-thinking coach and an AED. Sharp Edge CrossFit gym owner Tani Mintz jumped into action when Mike Fowler (both above) suffered a heart attack during her class. It was a harrowing experience, but doctors said Fowler was incredibly lucky.

Evanston teen born with his intestines outside of his stomach now a star high school football player. In utero, Enijel Shelton had gastroschisis, a condition that results from a tear in the abdominal wall, pushing a baby’s intestines to the outside of its body.
