In Ladakh, the Indian Army has new combat vehicles that are faster and have better manoeuvrability for operating in the difficult terrain at a height of over 16,000 feet.

After extensive trials in the high altitude plateau region of Eastern Ladakh, a dozen of these new machines, known as the Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle, were inducted.

The vehicle is equipped with a remote-controlled 360-degree machine gun and can carry 12 fully armed soldiers who can fire from the 10 firing ports inside.

The vehicles are bulletproof against small arms fire.

“These are wheeled vehicles that allow our rapid response forces to move quickly and can be used at night.” “The induction occurred following extensive field trials, and the vehicles are perfectly suited for the plateau region,” an army official said.

Tata Advanced Systems Limited manufactures these in-house. The need for such vehicles was felt at the height of the military conflict in Ladakh with China in the summer of 2020. The Indian Army began trials two years ago, as the Chinese made aggressive moves.

The Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle is an armoured personnel carrier that can be used for quick patrols and troop induction for missions such as reconnaissance and offensive operations.

With the situation in Ladakh still fragile, this is an important addition to the Indian Army. Despite a piecemeal disengagement from the friction points, a final resolution has yet to be reached after 16 rounds of Corps Commander level military talks.

The Indian Army has been steadily adding platforms to its arsenal in order to improve its capabilities in Ladakh. Previously, the army received a dozen new indigenously built strong boats for deployment in Pangong Lake, which have anti-ramming capabilities and increased capacity to accommodate additional troops.

According to officials, the vehicle was designed in close collaboration with the Indian Army and paves the way for future platforms such as light tanks and other high-altitude requirements.

There have been additions on the Chinese side as they dig in their heels.

Last year, the Chinese military unveiled the VN22, which has been described as a “new generation” armoured vehicle. It’s a six-wheeled vehicle that the Chinese claim can withstand a 10 kg TNT explosion.

The images released revealed a resemblance to the Stryker armoured vehicle used by US forces. It, like all similar platforms, can conduct patrol, reconnaissance, and attack missions.
