Four firefighters were injured Sunday morning after two Oakland Fire Department ladder trucks collided while responding to a blaze in a former Pacific Gas & Electric building.

The firefighters were taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution Sunday after the crash, which happened shortly before 8 a.m. at the intersection of 20th Street and Broadway in Oakland, according to Michael Hunt, an Oakland Fire Department spokesman.

The crash happened as the two ladder trucks responded to a fire that broke out in the sixth floor of a vacant building at 19th and Webster streets, which was less than a quarter-mile away and formerly owned by PG&E, Hunt said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

About 20 firefighters brought the blaze under control, he said.

The circumstances surrounding the collision between the fire trucks remain under investigation. Two of the firefighters returned to work later in the day, while the other two were discharged from the hospital and went home with minor injuries, Hunt said.
