POUGHKEEPSIE – City of Poughkeepsie firefighters were summoned to the 11th floor of a Main Street hi-rise on Tuesday at 5:50 p.m. to battle a fire in one of the apartments.  The entire on-duty crew from Poughkeepsie arrived at 135 Main Street and were joined by crews from the Arlington and Fairview fire departments.

The fire occurred in an apartment on the 11th floor of the 13-story Admiral Halsey Senior Village complex.  Poughkeepsie firefighters were initially challenged by a broken fire hydrant in front of the building but quickly overcame the challenge and made their way to the 11th-floor apartment within minutes of arrival.

Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Joe Franco told Mid-Hudson News that the tenants from all of the units on the 11th floor were given the opportunity to relocate to the first-floor community room until the firefighters could ventilate the floor of the heavy smoke.

“The firefighters encountered heavy black smoke when they entered the apartment where the fire had started in the bedroom,” Franco said, adding “The firefighters discovered a mattress and dresser that was on fire in the apartment and quickly extinguished the flames.”

Moments after the professional firefighters from Arlington and Fairview helped the Poughkeepsie crew put the hose lines back on the apparatus and left to return to their stations, Poughkeepsie firefighters responded to a smoke alarm at the hi-rise Rip Van Winkle apartments further down Main Street.
