A dramatic rescue that included firefighters in hazmat suits, was executed by Nelson Mandela Bay emergency services after a dog fell into a manhole in South End on Friday afternoon.

A reader who witnessed the incident and wants to be known as GQ Reader, said that the dog fell into the manhole at the bottom of Brickmaker's Kloof Road, opposite Nauti-Tech Suzuki, on Friday around 12:30.

He said that there were two men, one bald man and one in a black hoodie, who stayed with the dog and called the emergency services.

"They came from the Bridge Street Brewery and must have seen the dog fall into the manhole, which seems to have been opened for work and left open," he said.

"Lucky dog. They stayed with the dog until the Humewood Fire Team arrived to extract the dog. The firemen had to put two ladders together to get to the bottom of the manhole. A fireman put on a full bright yellow hazmat suit, obviously to protect him from possible rabies infection.
