Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) may be gone from Chicago Fire, but he’s not forgotten. The character made a satisfying return during the season 10 finale, and he continues to factor into the decisions of the 51 squad.

Casey’s absence has taken the biggest toll on Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), who, despite still having feelings for Casey, decided to end their long distance relationship. It was sad but ultimately logical choice, and it led some fans to question whether we’ve heard/seen the last of the firefighter.

Fortunately, that isn’t the case. Fire showrunner Derek Haas talked about the decision to axe Brettsey as a couple, and why Casey will continue to be a presence on the show.

“No matter how much she loves Casey, and it’s undeniable, she’s making decisions now that are for her own future and for her life with this paramedicine cause, which is really near and dear to her”, Haas told TV Line. “We’re going to chart it, and you’ll see that grow a lot, and you’ll hear her talking about it.”

It’s smart that the show will chart the fallout of the break up, instead of having Brett carry on as though she’s not hurting emotionally. It makes it more realistic, and helps fans get through the breakup as well.

When asked whether there’s a chance of Brett and Casey getting back together down the line, the showrunner was hopeful. “Oh, yes”, he teased. “We’re always hoping those stars align.” We won’t hold our breath for a reunion to happen anytime soon, but we could definitely see a world in which Casey returns to Chicago in a big romantic gesture to win Brett back.

Ideally, both characters will have grown in the interim, and the stars will “align” as Haas put it. We’re confident that we haven’t seen the last of Casey or the couple.
