Yarmouth fire crews battle a fire from four 40-feet trailers on Aug. 4 at 5:04 a.m.Alvin Buyinza

All three fire Yarmouth fire station crews battled a large fire at the town’s transfer station early Thursday morning in Cape Cod, according to a press release from the station.

At 5:04 a.m. the crews responded to a 911 call reporting four 40-foot long trailers on fire. The trailers were filled with construction debris waiting to be transported off the Cape, the department said.

The Yarmouth crews “attacked” the trailer fires from all sides to get the flames under control, while the mutual aid fire engines and ambulances covered the town. However, while battling this fire, other Yarmouth crews and mutual aid apparatus had to respond to five other calls, including medical calls and commercial fire alarms, according to Acting Deputy Kevin Huck .

Tower 41 – a ladder truck with a master stream device – was brought onto the scene at 7 a.m. and set up on the debris loading platform pouring water onto the fire for an hour and a half, the department stated.

At 8:10 a.m. Childs Equipment – a local construction company – arrived on the scene with a large excavator pulling the trailers apart and spreading the debris to be extinguished by the crews. Crews are expected to be on the scene for several more hours, the department said. Despite the efforts, the trailers are a complete loss.

The fire started with one fire truck and then spread onto the other three trucks, Acting Deputy Huck.

The department said although Yarmouth is under water restrictions, thousands of gallons of water were needed to battle this fire.

“... it’s important for homeowners to adhere to the water restriction currently in place and available at the Town of Yarmouth Website,” the department said. Thursday is a “no-water day” in Yarmouth.
