Three Blair County fire companies are among those receiving Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants, aimed to help rural communities fight brush and forest fires.

The Wolf administration announced Tuesday that it had awarded $762,414 in grants to qualifying local firefighting forces in rural areas and communities with fewer than 10,000 residents.

The funding may be used for training and equipment purchases directly related to fighting brush and forest fires.

Funds awarded to area fire companies include: Blue Knob, $5,500; Duncansville, $1,289; Logan Township United, $12,500, in Blair County; Six Mile Run, $1,508, in Bedford County; Cresson, and Lilly, $10,000 each; Hope, $1,799; Dauntless, $5,981; Carrolltown, $3,180, in Cambria; and Shade Gap, $3,810; Mill Creek Borough, $6,781; and Huntingdon Regional, $6,250, in Huntingdon County.

Grants are awarded on a cost-share basis, and the maximum grant awarded in 2022 is $12,500. Priority was placed on projects that include the purchase of wildfire suppression equipment and protective clothing.

Grants may also be used for purchasing mobile or portable radios, installing dry hydrants, wildfire prevention and mitigation work, training wildfire fighters, or converting and maintaining federal excess vehicles.
