The Ames Fire Department celebrated its newest fire and rescue vehicle, the department's first tower, Monday.

The department welcomed community members to view the $1.16 million apparatus, which includes an aerial device with a basket on the end at the "push-in" ceremony, a fire tradition dating to the late 1800s.

At the time, horse-drawn equipment needed to be disconnected from the horses and pushed into the fire stations. Monday, mayor John Haila, councilmember Gloria Betcher, firefighters and community members pushed the new fire truck.

The new vehicle, named Tower One, will give firefighters access to high-rise structures and allow elevated water streams.
