CHARLOTTESVILLE Va (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Charlottesville Fire and Rescue Department has hosted its first girl's fire and rescue camp.

This is to help explore opportunities for more diversity and engagement in the profession.

A discussion was held to discuss how they could go about making the fire department more diverse.

The idea was to host a girl's fire and rescue camp.

There, the girls practiced emergency skills such as CPR, using a fire hose, and checking people's blood pressure.

This is in order to get them familiar with the field and train those who are interested in pursuing the position.

"I think that it is invaluable in any community, but especially here in Charlottesville, where there was nothing like this prior to us doing it.

So to be able to create an opportunity for girls in the community to come and see what it is like to be in a field that is male-dominated and see women in uniform. " Jackie Paiva, Charlottesville Firefighter & EMT.

Several girls graduated from the camp today.

Some say that they would do it again.

"It shows for younger girls, I think they can do it as well." Emmi, a student of the camp.

The Charlottesville Fire Department says they are looking forward to doing the camp again next year.
